Avoca was established in 1869, in connection with the construction of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad through the area. The name “Avoca” is derived from an old Irish tale, meaning “where the bright waters meet”. Though the biggest town in rural Pottawattamie County, Avoca has a population of only 1683*. It is famous for being the hometown of several notable actors (including Richard Beymer,and Johnny Carson), and is the home of the original Pottawattamie County Fair established in 1896.

Known for its legendary rodeo and its charming hometown movie theater (the Dreamland Theatre), the Carson community is a tight-knit group always willing to go above and beyond for one of their own.  

​Carson is a cozy, little town 30 minutes outside the Omaha Metro area with friendly folks on every street. Broadway, the main street in Carson, is always dressed in its finest for every season!  You’ll definitely want to check it out!

Nestled in the Loess Hills of Pottawattamie County, Crescent plays home to a recreational landscape (with Mt. Crescent, Hitchcock Nature Center, and Pokomoke Pool) and is a haven for food lovers (The Pink Poodle, Henry’s Diner, Denny’s, Stanley’s Snack Shack, and the Crescent Roadhouse Bar and Grill).

​All you need to do is check out this great park added by the locals and see Crescent Elementary to see their commitment to the community!

The village of Macedonia is small in size, but mighty in personality!  Macedonia houses 2 museums, a performing arts theater, an honor system library, and an art gallery all on the main street.  The small village has outdone itself in the details from the wrought-iron railings along Main Street to the covered Grand Stand (one of only 2 in Iowa) at the ball field. Plus, now you have the chance to take it in overnight at The Macedonia House Bed and Breakfast!

Donia Days is held every August, usually the 3rd week and it’s an event everyone shows up for!

McClelland may be small but big in personality!  The town boasts of a beautiful garden and park right on the main street and plays home to the famous Dew Drop Inn!  Stop in for a burger and stay for the ambiance.  Friendly and fun describes the town and people to a tee.

Just a quick couple of miles of Interstate 80, Minden just recently updated their town triangle as they call it!  Boasting an all new area in the center of town, Minden is also known for the Breezy Hill Winery, Minden Meat Market, and a deluxe ball field area full every summer.

With great charm, vintage signs, a bowling alley, and a grocery store on the main street, you can’t go wrong!

Home to the Freedom Rock, OSI (Oakland Foods), and the Nishna Heritage Museum, Oakland boasts of a pool, golf course, dance studio, CHI health clinic, and the newest addition to town, a wellness nonprofit, Impact Hill.

​With a wide array of businesses, Oakland offers the many amenities of a more metropolitan area complete with a brand new Riverside Community Schools High School on the edge of town.

Just off of Exit 34 on Interstate 80, Shelby is a quaint little town with railroad connections including a depot and rail car in the park.
A beautiful walking trail runs through the town, and the main street has plenty of character.
Shelby’s big business include the Menard’s Warehouse and Cardinal Lofts.
​ Shelby is also home to the world’s largest corn stalk sculpture, in Agri-Symbol Pak.

With an ideal location, just a short drive out of the Omaha Metro area, Treynor is the land of increased housing developments and Cardinal sports!  A town that takes pride in its fitness and sports teams, Treynor is also home to Silo’s Restaurant, TS Bank, and Prairie Crossing Winery.  Treynor was also named an Iowa Community Vision Project winner in 2019.

When you think Walnut, you think Antique City.  Walnut is home to a large array of antique shops, but also includes a main street library, a one-room country school available for viewing, and the new home of the Walnut Recreation Center!  The charm and small-town friendliness of Walnut will be noticeable right away!  Be sure to stop in at Robert’s Bakery for a divine homemade treat when you’re visiting for the Antique Walks held throughout the year.
